A one-person studio making generative instruments for people who perform visuals live.
I started VJing back in 2016 at a weekly underground basement EDM show.
Every Tuesday, I would scramble in to set up off to the side of the stage. All night, every night, I would be playing with the Resolume effects and parameters. I'd midi-map them, audio-react them, sync them to BPM, and eventually I even began to create my own visuals using nothing but those very same effects and sources.
That was the beginning of iogen.io
Those patches became the first iogen packs, and CyberSync, in 2018, was the first to be released. What set them apart then still sets them apart now. They aren't rendered clips. Each pack is a composition that draws every frame live, so it weighs kilobytes instead of gigabytes, scales to any screen, and moves with the room.
Through the years
- 2016 Neal starts VJing at a weekly underground show and building visuals from Resolume's own effects.
- 2018 iogen.io opens in May with CyberSync. Mini follows in June, free, for Neal's birthday, and Confusion in September.
- 2019 Equalize in January, Gemini in June, Fear V2 and the Fear and Confusion bundle in October. In December every pack gets a Resolume 7 version, the free Sampler arrives, and so does Essential Palettes.
- 2020 ioValentine in February, and updates for Resolume 7.1.1 in March.
- 2021 Prismatic in June, then the free Generative Faces.
- 2022 Updates for Resolume 7.13.2, with new visuals for Confusion and Fear.

Generative, then and now
I had a lapse in productivity due to personal projects. I was still creating the entire time, in silence. I made products for just myself, hundreds and hundreds of generative tools without AI. I kept pace for as long as I could with those who did use it, but now I'm seeing tools eclipse what I was able to do alone. I decided to adopt AI for tooling, and I am reviving iogen. I hope to see how far I can push these tools. I am, after all, a Generative Artist, and have been well before AI tools took over.
Writing systems that make images is the craft, and modern AI tools are generative tools too. iogen uses them where they help build better instruments: plugins, faster experiments, and free tools in the Lab.
What iogen doesn't do is sell the output of image and video diffusion models. Everything here is a tool, or art made live with tools. Every product carries a label saying how it was made, and How it's made explains each one.
